FEAR OF THE DARK
There’s a pain in your heart
that you feared from the start,
was a scream from an long tortured life.
A scar upon your soul
frames an old gaping hole,
where you prayed you had buried the knife.
And the stains on your cheeks
meant to make you feel meek;
so mildly dejected and down.
For the clouds in your eyes
shield a sorrow so despised
that still lies ‘neath a cold fading frown.
And dreams that torment,
yet refuse to relent
seeking payment for long past infractions,
chase you down familiar streets
as you hide beneath the sheets,
hoping dawn will support your reactions.
Yet the minutes tick so slowly
round a clock held high and holy,
as the dusk creeps again from behind.
And the horrors in its hands,
grow more grave and yet so grand,
tolling bells inside a tormented mind.
